Championing MD issues that matter
At every opportunity, Lesser Slave River Council engages provincial and federal decision-makers, industry leaders, fellow municipal leaders, and other stakeholders in discussions focused on tackling key regional issues. These activities underscore Council concerns about how the Province is handling particular issues; and advocate for solutions to these issues.

Highway 88 Deficiencies
Highway 88 is becoming increasingly unsafe, and there is no substantive provincial plan to improve it despite its status as a vital economic corridor.
Marten Beach Flooding
Recurring fooding events have damaged homes, displaced residents and curtailed public use of Marten Beach. We must step up and safeguard this community.
Mitsue Industrial
To support existing operations and attract new industry, we need the Province to prioritize improvements to the economic corridor infrastructure.
Smith Bridge Rebuild
The Smith Bridge is six years past its engineered life span. The time to rebuild is now, and we're working with the Province to prioritize the required funding.
Our Formula for Change
There are many, many rural municipalities in Alberta jostling for a finite pool of federal and provincial grant dollars. The MD does its level best to add weight, clarity and impact to its requests from the different levels of government.
- Isolating and Articulating the IssuesFrom infrastructure to health care, there are a variety of matters that need attention across the MD. Council and senior leadership work together to prioritize the key issues that reflect the priorities of residents, and then communicate these issues to provincial decision-makers.
- Consistent, Persistent Council AdvocacyThroughout the year, Council corresponds with municipal and provincial stakeholders to champion the causes that are important to the MD and its residents.
- Promoting Awareness, Engagement and ActionFrom time to time, the MD provides opportunities for citizen, industry leaders and municipal neighbours to share their insights and add their voices to the cause. When the public weighs in, the Province tends to listen a little more closely.
- Maintaining the MomentumEach of the MD's regional issues has its own facts, narratives, timelines and stakeholders. As these issues progress, we will report back to the community via this website.
Stay up to speed on the Smith Bridge rebuild initiative
The MD received more than $2.5 million in provincial infrastructure funding in early 2023, paving the way for short-term safety measures and allowing the MD to embark on a staged rebuild. Find out what progress has been made since then.
